What makes back glass different from a windshield
A windshield is laminated — two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, so it cracks but holds together. That changes the repair equation: a chipped windshield can be repaired, but shattered back glass essentially always means a full replacement, because there is nothing left to repair.
The defroster grid and antenna
The thin lines baked into your rear window are the defroster grid, and many vehicles also run the AM/FM or other antennas through the back glass. A proper replacement reconnects these so your defroster clears the window on a cold Reno morning and your radio still works. A cheap job that leaves them unhooked technically installs glass but leaves you with a rear window that fogs and a radio that hisses.
